Inspired by the often overlooked history of domestic female craft in the development of computation and parametric design, we aimed to create an interaction that would both educate the community on this history and introduce a specifically feminine sense of care into a space on campus.

	We intentionally chose Carnegie Mellon’s Newell-Simon bridge as our location, as it bridges the computer science and robotics buildings on campus. These are both heavily male-dominated fields, and the design and architecture of the buildings reflect this sentiment. Our installation contrasts with the culture and physical environment it's in through its colors, subject matter, and material choice. It subtly and poetically subverts dominant narratives around design, and is a soothing reminder of the analog and tactile processes that preceded our technology-dominated world.

	By doing this, we were able to define a physical space where members of the community can read about the historical role of domestic and female labor in modern design, or simply pause for a moment to exist in a serene and comforting space of reprieve from the responsibilities they may be facing.

	There's a unique sense of care, patience, empathy and human touch inherent in female craft practices that has been lost in design as it has evolved into a field dominated by men and technology. Most design work we learn about and most projects we’ve participated in are typically digital, and influenced by the design ideologies of white men. We believe that applying our communication design skills and techniques to a physical textile medium will subvert dominant design paradigms, and bring to light a history that has been erased in modern design discourse.

	In a world where Zoom squares once defined our shared spaces, we've evolved, adapted, and transformed. Some of us got to know each other digitally months or years before we saw each other physically. We conquered 16-hour time differences, navigated the challenges of virtual whiteboards like Miro, and weathered the storms of lost connections (WiFi and otherwise).

	As we stood at the precipice of graduation and embarked on the next chapter of our lives, the CMU Design Class of 2024 invited visitors to ponder the question: "End Meeting for All?" As we wandered through the floors of Miller ICA, we thought: is this the conclusion of a chapter, or the commencement of something new? Our senior show was not simply a retrospective; it was a celebration of how we've expanded in dimensions, both as individuals and as a collective cohort. The challenges of our inception molded us into a dynamic and resilient group, and through this showcase, we shared the rich tapestry of our experiences.

	Michael Sadecky ran his puppeteering business for 39 years alongside his brother Jay. Starting in 1981, they brought joy to 21 states through 24,000 shows, performing up to 1,200 shows in one year in shopping malls, festivals, and school assemblies. We were lucky enough to have a conversation with Michael about his life, beginning in puppets, moving to his love for music and entertainment.

	This book serves as an homage to southern hospitality culture, but it also explores themes of generational trauma, femininity, and how these themes have transpired and manifested in my personal life.

My work at the Carnegie Museum of Art focuses on making exhibitions and programs accessible and engaging for the public through bold visual identities, printed pieces, and digital assets. 	The weather may be cold, but this party brings the heat. For one night, the galleries stay open late, with the Hall of Sculpture transformed—lit up and filled with DJs and dancing. Now in its fourth year, the design used color and layered textures to echo the lighting of the space, radiating warmth throughout.

	Inside Out is Carnegie Museum of Art’s free summer performance and music series, originally established in 2021. For its fourth season, I expanded the program’s visual language through new, bold, and playful shapes that emphasize motion, activation, and movement. Designed primarily for social media, these assets invited the community into a space for celebration and connection, centering queer and marginalized voices while reflecting the energy and joy of the weekly gatherings.

	The visual system draws from editorial traditions, using a light gray to create an archival tone. Select assets incorporate a newspaper-inspired photo layout to reinforce the journalistic roots of the work.

	Gala Porras-Kim: The reflection at the threshold of a categorical division

	Gala drew inspiration from what she called the “dredges” of the museum’s collection—objects that often remain overlooked or undervalued. Together, we were guided by the distinctive forms and presences of these pieces. To echo this sensibility, I chose silver ink for the brochure and wall text, a color that suggests reflection, both literal and conceptual. The deep red grounds the design in a sense of power and authority, evoking associations with monarchy and ritual, while also highlighting the layered histories embedded in the objects.

	Charles Harlan drew from the dual nature of fire as both warmth and destruction. In this show, this is epitomized in the form of a brick chimney. The layout and structure of the design in the brochure echo the stacking of bricks. More broadly, the approach reflects Harlan’s recurring interest in the industrial, agricultural, and domestic aspects of the built environment. A palette of warm gray and red underscores the tension and dialogue between the industrial and the natural.

	For Fault Lines, I drew from the exhibition’s focus on the entangled histories of the Atlantic World. I used river forms on the gallery guide and wall text to signify both natural boundaries and conceptual “faults” between European and Caribbean worldviews. This visual language echoes the exhibition’s exploration of art, empire, and the ruptures within cultural exchange.

	For after school,&#38;nbsp;I drew from objects traditionally tied to classrooms, like magnifying glasses, notebook paper, and erasers. I abstracted them into forms suggesting building blocks and architecture. This visual approach reflects the exhibition’s focus on the structures that shape education: from the physical design of schools to the systems, metrics, and histories that organize how knowledge is created, shared, and contested.

Utilizing the Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus system as a guiding framework, I explored the history and geography of different Pittsburgh suburbs. Once I reached the end of each of&#38;nbsp; twelve bus lines, I spent hours in each neighborhood; speaking with residents, capturing photographs, and attempting to gain a more general feel for each distinctive area.

	As someone now newly studying history, I felt it not only interesting, but necessary to learn about the area around me. I wondered how I (Hannah Lesser) got here, which then led me to question how we (Carnegie Mellon) got here. I thought this project might give me a bit of grounding and begin to answer some of these questions. I thought it could provoke me and others to get out of Carnegie Mellon’s “bubble,” both physically and figuratively.

	The people I had the privilege of speaking with made me a more conscious designer and person. Through the conversations I had, I began to learn and garner oral histories from residents who had lived in these places for decades, some more than fifty years. Most of those I spoke with were older adults, although not all. These are people who have witnessed and experienced the effects of the changes brought on by deindustrialization in their communities firsthand. These were stories I would be unlikely to find online or in any type of database, either because residents wouldn't have known how, wouldn't have had the means or interest to share these stories on the internet, or they’d simply been deemed insignificant.

	Carnegie Mellon University is widely known for its STEM programs, but has a lack of understanding and promotion surrounding the arts. The university has a long history of producing a connection to the arts, however that connection tends to go unnoticed. Through our publication, we hope to provide a formal lens into that world. Lemon Magazine aims to showcase student artistic practices in an effort to build a community not only for the artistic population at CMU, but also to extend beyond to the broader CMU and Pittsburgh population.

	For our second issue of Lemon following our pilot issue, the theme was Absurdity. As Head of Production, my role inculded overseeing a team of six designers to see the magazine to fruition.
